Making Money Online in 2012

It's been a while since I posted. Circumstances recently have mean't that it's time to take a new look at making extra money.

However the landscape has changed a lot over the last few years. So how are people making money online these days? Are they selling text links and sponsored posts on their site? Are they using contextual advertising to make their money or is through selling affiliate products?

I read an interesting article today that showed some of the top ways to make money online in 2012. Fantastic lets start with number one and see how we go.

Freelance Content Writing - the site mentions you can head along to iwriter.com so that is exactly what I did. Signed up right away. Its going to be interesting trying this one, as the money paid is quite low with the expectations are high.

Has anyone tried this?

Creating a facebook page for your website

Well being on holiday for a few days with the kids, has given me a bit of time to work on getting a page set up for my jobhunters websites. If you can get a page set up, and then get lots of people to like it the theory is that it can virally spawn off traffic as friends of friends see it and so on.

I am running a small advert campaign from within facebook as well to send traffic to my main site and will report back on that in due course.

Anyway I have just set up my page and only have a few likes on it right now. However if you have a page and want to do a "Like Swap" Please like my page below and leave a comment with yours and I will go and do a like on that, and encourage my visitors to do the same. Why I love my Nexus One

Well I finally got a Nexus One ( AKA Google Phone ). Most of my colleagues at work have iphones however I am not a Mac fan and loved the way that with the Android operating system I was supporting something open source.

It took me a few days to get used to all the little shortcuts and features of this phone, but the more I use it the more I like it. I really like how I can take a picture of my kids with the 5 Megapixel camera, click about two buttons and its posted on my facebook profile.

Best things

• Great screen, a little larger than the standard iphones


• Looks super cool - slimmer than the standard iphone


• Is different from everyone else


• Great app store


• Fantastic integration with all the Google products. Open up Google maps and it shows you exactly where you are with its built in GPS.

Worst things

• Battery life is not great


• Track ball is a little flakey.

Aint Karma a Bitch?

You know... its never easy doing paid work for someone, especially when its create a website or something along those lines. A couple of years ago I did some work for a friend of my then father in law's, he wanted a site set up and so on.

Now.. its important to point this out.. I told him I wasn't a web designer, and he seemed to understand that at the time, so we talked about setting up a blog, something he could ideally maintain himself.

Roll forward a few months, he had obviously decided I was a web designer ( which I am not ) and kept asking for this and that, and liasing with his graphics guy to set up what he had in his mind as the perfect site for his business.

Anyway meanwhile... my marriage broke up - so I was trying to get back on my feet, find a place to live and so on, and he started getting all Pissy and started saying how I wasn't delivering what he wanted ( hey remember.... was only trying to help him out I AM NOT A WEB DESIGNER ).

To cut a long story short, he got even more pissy, asked for me to handover the site details to another party and asked me to send him a final bill which he would then pay.

Well roll forward time he never paid. However get this the main guy ( a celebrity ) he had fronting his product and book etc, is all over the news for molesting teenage girls and another thing... he now has this website up and running and promotions going through a chain of stores in NZ, but he doesn't seem to realize the website URL is still registered under my account. If I was a prick I could just shut it down right now.

I guess the whole point of this post is, you don't have to lower yourself to anyones level but try to keep something back if you ever do work for anyone like that. I may or maynot send him a reminder invoice, haven't made up my mind yet but thought of the word KARMA when I read the news recently and saw the main face of this guys product with mud all over it.

Google Phone - I want a Nexus One

There has been a lot of buzz about lately in regards to the "Google Phone" that Google gave their employees to play with at Christmas time.

Based on the Android operating system if done well this looks to be a real threat to iphones and knowing Google they never do things by half measures.

Google have scheduled a press conference at their headquarters on January 5th, they haven't confirmed it but the internet is full of rumours that this is when they will announce the new phone officially.

Unconfirmed reports hint at a price of just over $500 unlocked, or under $200 on a 2 year plan.

After looking at some of the articles and reading about the Android operating system one thing is for sure... I want one! iphones are great but the apps are very limited due to the strict controls Apple keeps over everything.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Well its been a long one... but what a year 2009 has been. I would like to take this opportunity to wish all my readers a Merry Christmas, and what I hope for all is a fantastic New Year!

Here at the Million Dollar Experiment Down Under we have been quietly working away behind the scenes and making money online with a number of different concepts.

Number One Earner for 2009... Selling tyres on Trademe ( Similar to Ebay in other countries ) . Yes its bizarre but this year my main online money earner has been selling Tyres ( Tires for those American Visitors ). By finding a product I can buy cheaply and sell at a profit thousands of dollars have been created with minimal effort.

Curry Fans Go Crazy for Leftover Ham and Turkey Recipes.... When checking the stats for our Curry Focus site I was very impressed to find that well timed articles written to make leftover ham curry and one for leftover Turkey curry going crazy. It pays to think ahead sometimes and by using predictable events, like Christmas and Thanksgiving, you can make money fast and smartly with well timed articles.

Text Links and Sponsored Posts... These are a thing of the past for me, I prefer to make my money nowadays on content and selling products. Others may still do ok out of these money making avenues but for me the time has come to diversify.

Looking ahead to 2010... for the year ahead I plan on launching some new concept sites, as well as working away at my main income earners. ( Curry Recipes, Job Sites and Tyre Sales ).

Enjoy your holidays, make goals and set targets for 2010 and remember that by changing your tactics, watching for opportunities and not being afraid to stick your head out you can make real money online.

The Simple Facts

Several years on after I began the blogging experiment and started reading all the "A-Bloggers" Blogs, there is only about one blog I think that I have kept following all this time and that is Shoemoneys Blog.

The others seem a bit stuck on the same subjects, time after time. There are only so many times you can read about how to get new readers, how to come up with a funky blog headline or the latest blogging mastermind course before they all start to sound the same. Shoemoney however seems to be able to come up with different stuff all the time, and I think that is because he just blogs about what's on his mind, or what new stuff he has come across.

As for me I continue to make a few dollars from the various websites that I operate although funnily enough the biggest money making idea I have come across lately is selling stuff on Trade me ( NZ's equivalent of Ebay ). By utilizing my past career's contacts and product knowledge I have managed to make hundreds of dollars a month selling of all things Tires online.

I think I have come to a crossroads on this blog.. I no longer are motivated to blog about making money by writing about making money but are happy to share my ideas and success's or simply if I come across something interesting. I can't promise to make anyone rich quick, and will not try to send you to a site that pretends to do exactly that, but I will share any great ideas that I come across and will always answer any questions that you may have.

Currently I have moved sites that were .co.uk but hosted in NZ to hosting in the UK. There are mixed opinions on this but it appears the search engines may indeed factor in the locality of a sites hosting into the equation.

I continue to sell products online, promote my sites and collect money from advertising and will share anything I learn with the readers of this site.

The Jobhunters sites started more than two years ago when we created a single site in New Zealand. It proved fairly popular so the next step was an Australian version, followed by a European site, fairly recently a Canadian site joined the group and now we are looking to help people looking for work in the States.

Matching employers to jobseekers is something I find personally satisfying, the sites have never made a great deal of money, however I think the concept is a good one. The employers are able to browse the categorized listings of job seekers and then contact them, with no private details divulged unless the candidate decides to respond.

Each response is checked first to ensure its not spam, ( or some kind of network marketing offer or get rich quick scheme!! ) and if relevant forwarded on to the candidates. New candidates are displayed on the front page of the site for a period of time. If we don't get a rush of sign ups your profile could be on the main page for days!

Great Itunes (free) app - clean up duplicates.

Its a raining Saturday afternoon, so I am sorting out my itunes library. I am always having problems with duplicate songs and songs that are on my computer but don't make it into my itunes library. After a bit of googling I have found a great app, that is even better because its free and works like a charm.

Meta ipod

Basically you install the app, add any folders that contain your music. The app then scans the folders and your itunes library and highlights a number of areas including duplicate songs, and missing songs. The scan took about 20 min, but I have nearly 30 gig of music, so figured it would take a while.

After the scan you just click a button and work through fixing up whatever it finds, end result more music and less duplicates! A great way to clean up your library.

Let me know what you think of the application, if you decide to give it a go, I could not believe it was free for such a handy utility.

The Catch 22 of Text Link Ads

A couple of months ago I got an email from Text Link Ads that informed me they would no longer be selling new links on my site as Pagerank had gone.

This is ironic because if I hadn't sold text links I would still have a great pagerank.....

Nowadays I don't even bother trying to sell text links, however keep earning money of those that I have sold in the past. As they drop off however my monthly income from these sources slowly declines.

Are text links a thing of the past? Maybe with the increased popularity of search engines like "bing" Google will focus on providing great search results for sites that have great relevant content, and stop punishing sites for trying to make a few dollars (Which one could argue helps to encourage that great content...)

One thing that I am going to try to do more of, and it's something I have probably neglected in the past is to stop worrying so much about making money out of every article or site that I own, and just to focus on building sites that are useful to people. I think if your site is popular enough the money will come and find you.

As for Text Link Ads, they keep paying me each month, so I won't be too rude, but I do have one word for them after that email...

Make Money Fast Legally With Articles

Over the last few years I have experimented with countless ways of making money fast online legally and one of the best ideas that I am going to share with you today is simply writing good articles that will create passive income for you month after month. If I had more motivation I would simply churn them out day after day, however with working full time and the other demands of life I am just glad that I have written some sensible ones in the past that bring in thousands of visitors every month.

If I lost my job or needed extra money and had the time I would simply repeat this formula over and over again, maybe you can make the most of what I have learned..

1./ Get a great title with keywords that don't have to much competition.

This is key to the long term success of your article, find something that may even sound boring or mundane and write an article about it, rememember however it must be related to your website for the best results. When I was looking at writing an article for my job site I found that a lot of people were searching for information on how many work days in a year, so wrote this simple yet informative article that answered the question. Last month 690 people landed on my site via this article and it appears on the front page of google for that very question.

Sure its not going to make a million dollars, however its regular income every month from the content related adverts that I run on it.

2./ Write something unique and helpful that people will comment on and link to.

Make sure the article you write gives answers to the questions that people are searching for everyday. That way other sites will link to you and forums where these questions are being discussed will tend to send traffic your way.

3./ Write more than a few lines

I generally write 4 or 5 paragraphs at least as that seems to work well. Google won't tell us what their algorithm is however it seems obvious they are going to ignore or lend little value to just a few lines of text.

4./ Consistently create content

My most popular curry recipe site is updated at least weekly by one of my internet partners who fortunately is a lot more motivated when it comes to writing content than I am. Over the years this site now has hundreds of articles that attract thousands of visitors every month.

So there it is, as always there is no element of rocket science involved, just common sense, consistency and content. Key factors in the art of making legal money online!

How to Make Your AdWords Advert a Successful One

I have been experimenting a little bit with a couple of small Adwords campaigns, directed to landing pages in an attempt to generate a little extra money. The first problem that I encountered was although I am getting impressions, people are simply not clicking on the adverts, so its now mission time, to try to generate an advert that not only converts impressions into clicks, but converts the right kind of customers that will actually buy as well!

Nothing is ever easy in this world is it.

I am trying to sell Matrix DVD's to a target market of UK. I am pointing the advert to this landing page, which I whipped up from a template I found online, and filled with my amazon affiliate adverts for the Matrix DVD, the plan being to pay for cheap clicks from people actually wanting to buy the Matrix DVD, convert them and make a few dollars.

Its fair to say the advert is pretty crap. So I am going for a rewrite... and came up with this. Previously was getting 0% conversion so will post again in a few days and update if there is any change..

I found out from this article that you can actually add a keyword dynamically into the title so are going to give this a shot. Will let you know..

Laptop

I would be very lost without my laptop and would find it hard to go back to a desktop simply for simple convenience. Being able to get up and go anywhere and take your laptop with you is fantastic. Also having mobile broadband helps as well, even though it is not always the most reliable! Recently I have had to move around a lot, so its really been a bonus.

The Million Dollar Experiment Summary To Date

The Background

Back in October 2006 I started upon a journey that I hoped would make me One Million Dollars in cold hard cash. It is now 21 Months later and I have NOT made One million dollars yet, however I have made more than ten thousand dollars online and set myself up with a small monthly income whether I work at it or not.

All was well on target until January/February this year when my life literally fell to pieces and I ended up leaving my marriage, going through a very tough time both emotionally and financially and working on my experiment was to be quite honest the last thing on my mind.

Six months later the world is a different place for me, it has not been an easy time, by any stretch of the imagination, but as the saying goes

"What doesn't kill you makes you stronger"

and I believe I will come out of this whole experience wiser, smarter and happier in the long run, however it's going to take time and I would not wish the last six months on anyone.

Well one of many things I have learned is that money can be earned online, there have been some high points and low points along the journey and in some ways this is just beginning.

it would be fair to say that in the last four months I have learned more about human nature, greed, jealousy and loyalty than I have probably learned in a lifetime.

The key factors that I would like to share whether it comes to making money on line, sorting out personal problems or just living the life are....

• You will find friends in the most unexpected places.
• Don't turn your back on those that have yours
• Try not to worry about the things that you can not control
• Enjoy the precious times that you have with friends and family
• Remember that when things seem so bad that they could not be worse there is always someone much less lucky than what you are.

Apart from that there is not to much to say, treat others with respect, make the most of your opportunities and remember that life is short, good times are to be treasured and friends can last a lifetime.

Passive Income Starting to Kick In

Its taken a long time, well into the second year now but everyday I do make a bit of money whether I do anything or not.

I try not to spend to much time on things that are not going to help long term anymore and to be honest do not spend even a quarter as much time online as what I used to. Earnings have certainly suffered however every month I am still earning several hundred dollars via a mixture of online activities.

This site for some reason got a fair amount of PR back from the google gods, and that has certainly helped things income wise. However who knows when they will suddenly decide to take it away again. I used to really panic about PR but now just go with the flow, I have sites with no PR that I still sell links on and they do ok.

If you have a number of sites and can make a bit of passive out of each of them, surely you are on a winner.
