The Make Money Fast Honeymoon is Short but Sweet

I have noticed when writing articles about certain topics for a few days shortly after the article is published I tend to rank particularly well for the term, then suddenly they drop from the radar often altogether, and then over time they may slowly climb again.

It has now happened many times, I can probably almost plot it on a graph, however I will attempt to demonstrate with an actual example.

Key words Jennifer Lopez Exposed

Sep 14th Article Written
Sep 15th 13
Sep 16th 9
Sep 17th 9
Sep 18th 13
Sep 19th 17
Sep 20th 18
Sep 21st 13
Sep 22nd 9
Sep 23rd Vanished.... PUFF!

How weird is that, I guess Google likes recent content and you are in the spotlight for about 10 days then you are history.

Also I was thinking maybe that was the time the article may have been on the front page of my site, which of course has a higher PR than a page on its own.

I will watch in interest and see if it appears again in the near future as a blip on the radar, something to keep in mind though when writing articles it pays to keep them coming one after the other.

The tool I use for tracking my keywords is the Digital Point Keywords Tool

The Quest for Number One Spot

I have been pretty busy over the last couple of days, and had limited time on the computer. Also I have been having some weird headaches and pains all over my body lately probably from to much time on the computer. I think my body is telling me it is time to slow down a bit, its been a mad few months and most days I have spent up to 14 hours a day in front of a PC.

I am going to start limiting myself, otherwise I think it is to much, hopefully this won't have to great an effect on my experiment, and I can continue to build on the work already done.

I am interested to know though for those of you that spend big hours a day in front of the PC, how do you manage it and do you have any problems with aches and pains etc?

Anyway back to the subject of this post...finally one of the terms that I was trying to rank for has come in to sit at spot number 1 on Google. Certainly gives me a feeling of accomplishment, however the rush of traffic that I was expecting doesn't quite appear to be happening just yet. This proves to me that all though I am learning loads about how the search engines work and what it takes to rank well on them, I am only scratching the surface.

I still see SEO as the key to a lot of what I am trying to achieve. Unlocking the secrets of Google will help me fulfill my quest and I need to keep experimenting, learning from my mistakes and tuning my formula.

In other news I have been having problems with one of the hosting companies I use in NZ. I have had the same problem bring down one of my sites 5 times now, and although they fix it up pretty quick each time, they refuse to admit there must be an underlying issue causing it to reoccur.

Anyway it has now happened one time to many, so I am moving as many sites as I can away from them. This of course takes a bit of time as well.

Enjoy the weekend.

How a Blog Can Help Your Site

One of the first sites that I created back over a year ago now earns a small amount of passive income every month. About 6 or 7 months ago I added a blog to it as part of my SEO strategy and it is now pleasing to see that some of the articles on the site bring in good traffic. One of the more popular articles I wrote is about how to go about your resignation letter - it's quite possible that there are a great many people out there not to happy in their jobs!

Sometimes certain types of sites can become very static indeed, and its well known that Google not only likes unique content, but also regularly updated content which is one of the reasons that Blogs can become so well ranked.

You may remember some of the other experiments that have been recently carried out on the Million Dollar Experiment Down Under as we continue on our quest to Make Money Fast.

Female Celebrity Foot Picture Experiment
In a bizarre twist to this one, the site I wrote the article on has slipped to number 11 and this very site ranks number 2! Could this mean that this site is due for some extra pagerank love from the big "G"

Melissa Wolf Experiment
Ex penthouse pet Melissa Wolf has been playing with the law and on our celebrity blog we have enjoyed writing about it. Currently we are pulling up at position 20 for this popular term.

These terms are bringing regular traffic to my site, proving that you can pro actively increase traffic to your site by using some "smarts" in the way you write your articles. Make them related to your site and do a little research on the subject you are looking at to make sure you are honing in on popular words.

Can We Be Number One For Female Celebrity Foot Picture

As you probably have figured out by now if you are wanting to get a bunch of traffic and interest to your website it helps to focus on specific niches, and try and find a market that hasn't been particularly well catered for. Its all very cool having a blog about making money online, but you are one of many - you may do well, however its a lot harder than focusing on a niche with little competition.

How many blogs do you know thought that have a great article about a female celebrity foot picture?

Probably not to many and that is how I managed to rank number 5 for the term after just a few weeks. In the last two days that keyword and ones related to it have sent me around 30 unique visitors.

Following the success of this I have decided to take it one step further (sorry had to do it!) and I am now gunning for the number one position. You can check the current position by running the google search here. (Our SirBlogger.com site has been as high as 5, today sitting at 9 )

Today I added more content to the article, it is already ranking well however we all know Google loves content and specifically unique content. So now we wait and see what happens, however I think it will be good, especially as I managed to find a couple of great pictures of Jessica Alba's feet, and what lovely feet they are.

Have Patience With Your SEO - It Takes Time

One thing that I have definitely learned over the last 6-12 months is that SEO takes time. I am now fairly confident that with the tools that I have available I can do enough research to pick a good keyword or phrase, make the html and content changes to optimize for it, and lastly monitor the ranking of the words to determine when success kicks in.

However it takes at least a month, sometimes 3 -6 months to really start ranking and its important to not panic and start changing things around. Just have confidence in your abilities, make the changes and wait and watch. If of course nothing has happened in the 3-6 month period then it could be time to change tactics...

If you want an example of this, I have a curry recipes site and finally it is hovering around position 10 to 11 for the words "curry recipes" however it has taken around 6 months.

This site I optimized for the words "Make Money Fast" around the same time and it took a couple of months before we were even registering. Now we hover around 34 - 65 however it is slowly rising.

SEO is something you need to keep working at, and chipping away, eventually you will make it if you are persistent enough.

Writing Articles for Search Engines

Its been an interesting last few weeks for me, I am on a constant journey to improve my "smarts" when it comes to making money fast online, and this has meant trying to find the best ways (legit of course) to maximize the exposure of my sites on search engines.

There are lots of articles floating around about how best to write your article so that Google gives you lots of "love" however I am starting to think that Google is a hell of a lot smarter than what we think sometimes.

Often it is the term that you weren't even thinking about that brings in the visits and I am thinking that perhaps Google's algorithms are getting so smart at picking up unnatural looking keyword placements and emphasis that it is best to not think to much about it at all and just write what comes naturally to you.

I am starting to rank fairly well for a couple of terms on my Sir Blogger site however it is up and down a bit. Some of the current keywords I am enjoying some G love on at the moment are...

Britney Exline
- Front page for this kid who is so smart that she has entered college at age 15
female celebrity foot picture - We are also on the front page for this term.

Now celebrity foot picture has sent that site 31 visitors in the last couple of weeks and over the months and years ahead this may add up to many hundreds of visitors. All because I did the following...

  1. Found a term that was often searched for but not many results
  2. Wrote an article using the term as the start of the title
  3. Used the term a couple of times in the article once in italics
  4. Linked to the pages a couple of times with anchor text as or near to the key words
Thats all! Front page of Google with 4 simple steps, not rocket science but better than just writing an article with no thought at all of what you are trying to achieve. I strongly recommend against overdoing it. Just keep it basic and write good content and Google will figure it out.

Good luck!

How I removed 1600 unnecesary external links from my site in 5 minutes

Its always great when you have one of those "doh" moments and realize that you are doing something pretty stupid.

Over the last year I have had plenty of those moments, and the latest one was made glaringly obvious to me when I used the following SEO tool..

http://www.iwebtool.com/visual_pagerank

This tool displays a given web page in a graphical format showing all the external links that the site has. I think we all learned in SEO 101 that the less external links the better. A site will rank well if it has other sites linking to it, rather than it linking out to every man and his dog.

Anyway you can see from the image below (you may want to click on it to view it full size) the tool shows you which of the links on your page are external ones, as well as the pagerank of the sites that you are linking to.

When I did this (I have removed them now) I noticed how all the digg this, furl this and add to delicious etc were all counted as external links. Now as there were at least 4 or 5 of these on each article and over 475 articles on the site it doesn't take a mathematical genius to figure out that removing these would be beneficial to the SEO of this site.

I have seldom been dugg, furled or added to delicious so I guess I am not really losing much by removing them. It was just a matter of editing the template and removing the code.

If you do this don't forget to back up your template first!

Happy link pruning - I suggest you weigh it up for yourself.

Basic SEO Plan for a Website

Lately I have been approaching my sites with an SEO plan to try and improve their positioning for certain words. Anyway I thought other people out there may want to do something similar for their own sites and may not know where to start - so I have thrown together this simple SEO optimization template that you can follow.

Step 1 - Analyze your Organic Search Terms
Firstly you should have Google Analytics installed on your site and running for at least a week. Check out your top 5 to 10 keywords and see whats being sent organically to your site.

Step 2 - Check the popularity of key words and competition - decide
I would advise that you use keyword tools to find out what people are actually searching for. An ideal match for your site is keywords that are popular and you are maybe already getting a few searches from them which you can see coming through in Analytics. This means Google already thinks they are a good match for your site, its just a matter of making them an even better match.

Heres a list of keyword tools that I find useful - Keyword Tools

Step 3 - Title tags
Now that you know where you are going it is time to create the title tages, and make sure they reflect the keywords that you are trying to optimize for. Start at the left with the most powerful words and head to the right, try to have a maximum of 6 - 8 words.

Step 4 - Headings
It is believed that headings in the traditional < h1 > or < h2 > tags are the most optimal, consider placing your keywords in these tags on the page you are trying to optimize.

Step 5 - Content

Last but not least mention the words at least a couple of times in the main body content of the site. This should not be to hard to do because this is what your site is about right?

We are making great income from LinkWorth - how about you?

Google Giving Loads of Search Engine Love..

I have noticed that over the last three or so days on a couple of my sites the search engine traffic has increased enormously. PR has stayed the same however its obvious that something is going on with the algorithms because the increase is substantial.

I am interested to hear if other bloggers and site owners have noticed anything in the last couple of days.

The only problem with getting this kind of increase is that you start to expect it however its important to remember that it can be quickly taken away.

I was reading today an article about pagerank and what if Google decide to suddenly take it away - what happens to the whole text link industry if they do? Well I think it would simply get replaced with something similar, it wouldn't be to hard to calculate the value of back links for a site and work out a similar rating would it?

Google would still have to include backlinks as part of their algorithm so the best they could do would be to hide it.

You need to spread your revenue sources as much as possible, so if something is taken away from you your empire is strong enough to continue.

Keyword Density - SEO for Bloggers

Keyword density is something that you may or may not of heard of. When it comes to the SEO optimization of a page it should be right up there with title tags. We are going to explore in this article how Keyword Density can be used in the battle to optimize the content of your site for search engines.

What is Keyword Density?
Keyword Density is the number of times that a keyword is shown on a page in comparison to other words. Search Engines use this as part of their algorithm to determine a pages ranking or relevance to a particular keyword search.

What is the best Keyword Density?
Well unfortunately noone really knows however if you overdo it the search engines will think you are spamming and then you will really take a hit. One method that you can use to get an idea of the ideal keyword density for your keywords is to check a few URLs for keyword denstiy from the top results that are showing up on Google.

One handy tool http://www.gorank.com/seotools/ lets you type in up to 5 URLs and it will do a comparison on them all. I have run this on my favourite term "Make Money Fast" and the results are as below.

Now we can see from the results that the first couple of sites (which are number 1 and 2 in the google search results for the term "Make Money Fast" mention the term a lot more than what my site does, for me it could certainly pay to increase the density of this term on my site.

A Word of Warning
Be very careful when doing this, increase the density very gradually, dont just go and match whatever the top site is, as the search engines could punish you and that won't help your cause at all - my suggestion is to gradually increase the density over a few weeks and constantly monitor your results with a tool like the one we looked at in this article -Tracking Keywords - Bloggers Toolkit Series

Keyword Density is one of the major contributing factors to a good search engine ranking for your given words. Something I will be keeping a very close eye on in the future.

Make Money Fast Ranks

If you head to http://search.msn.com/ and type in "Make Money Fast" with any luck this site will be sitting at around number 2. Now from what I can figure out it appears that MSN puts a lot of weight into the title tag, however with Google the title tag although important does not hold as much weight with their algorithm.

So don't think Google is the only one out there - they are the biggest but you are probably better off appearing on page 1 of MSN than page 12 of Google.

My site is appearing right underneath wikipedia and I am now getting daily visits from this very term being typed into MSN.

If you want to achieve this kind of result for your own blog (and your own words of course) you may want to take a look at our SEO articles.

Make Money Fast Keyword Update

A summary and recap of our Make Money Fast Keyword Experiment
A few weeks ago I started to concentrate and optimize the keywords of my Blog towards something that would I believed at the time bring in a decent amount of Search Engine traffic. I decided to use the words "Make Money Fast" and I thought I would share with you how it is going and also recap on exactly what I did so that you can do the same if you wish to give your search engine traffic a boost.

Please use different words of course - it would be no great thing if we were all fighting over the same search space - don't worry there is plenty of other great phrases for everyone!

The initial Article related to this was Make Money Fast - An experiment in Choosing Words and was written on Friday the 13th of April of all days. Now it is almost a month later so its time to recap and see whats been happening.

The results to date
Every day when I check the search engine results I am now seeing a large number of referrals from various combinations of the Make Money Fast phrase for example today here are a few of them...you can click on them to see the Google search results.

how to make money really fast vancouver
make money in nz
how to make money with a dollar

how to earn 100 dollars fast

Well as you can see its working well and although I am nowhere on the horizon for the actual three words exactly (yet!) I am ranking well and pulling in good traffic from all kinds of similar phrases.

That's the results now if you have a Blog and are interested in doing something similar here's what you need to do..

1. Choose the phrase , best to make it 3 or 4 words
You want to choose something popular but not to popular. My favourite tool for keyword checking at the moment is this one.. http://freekeywords.wordtracker.com/ its very easy to use. Anyway you want to find a phrase that is regularly searched for but not to sought after. For example every man and his blog is trying to rank for "make money online" so there's probably not to much point in trying that your self.

To find out what your chances are going to be like do a search on Google for your chosen words and see what the quantity and quality of your competitors are like. This is the part that will make or break you so choose very carefully and don't be to picky. Its better to get 20 or 30 searches picking up your site and ranking on the first page than to be on page 27 of something really popular.

2. Change your Blog title to have these words at the beginning of your title
This is one of the most important places to have your keywords (along with content) so make sure these words come first.

3. Start mentioning your words often
Write posts that include the words, for example I have written articles like Make Money Fast method of the week - stuff like that is great and try and mention the words a few times in the articles that you are writing. Don't spam it though or the search engines could punish you which would not do your rankings any good at all!

4. Try and get people to link to you with the chosen words as Anchor Text
- and if you have multiple sites do this yourself.

Its 4 fairly simple steps and if you are looking at boosting the search engine traffic on your site I strongly recommend that you get into it. After 3 or 4 weeks you will start noticing results and if you do it well it can be a real boost to your traffic and your online earnings. Its ongoing as well and as you add more and more content related to your key phrase things should steadily improve.

Good Luck!

Make Money Fast Idea of the Week

Hidden away in the dark depths of many of our Blogs are a number of articles that may be ok to read and informative however they really never made it with the search engines so were not great hits. Most of us when starting out probably didn't spend a lot of time thinking about SEO optimized titles when we wrote these and if they were a hit it was probably in some ways blind luck.

On my Job Search Blog I have been moving some old posts over to my new Wordpress Blog one at a time and reposting them with SEO optimized Titles. Basically I have been going to this site http://freekeywords.wordtracker.com/ typing in a keyword and using terms that are highly sought after. I really believe that long term this is going to prove very effective. Alot of my early articles had pretty lame titles that were not particularly well thought out.

The Job Search Blog:

Anyway suddenly the light switched on and I thought that maybe it would be a good idea to go through some of my early posts on this site and also optimize them as this could help increase search engine traffic to this site.

So to sum up go through your old posts - use Google Analytics or similar to find out which articles are not ranking well (don't mess with the ones that are!) and SEO optimize the titles as well as some of the content with high ranking keywords. That way in the months to come you will pick up a lot more search engine traffic and it will aid your quest to Make Money Fast!

Increase Search Engine Traffic by 38 Percent in One Month

During the Month of April it is no secret that I have been trying like a bat out of hell to increase the traffic to this site. A number of SEO tweaks have been done over the last month and I thought you may be interested to see in real numbers what kind of effect this has had. For a comparison I am going to show you February's Google Search referrals, then March's and then Aprils. (Bearing in mind that not much was done in the way of tweaking during March.). Something else I have noticed is that visitors that arrive via the search engines tend to convert better than your regular visitors. This means that by getting more search engine traffic to your site it should convert into higher CTR's and more money.

February we are looking at 205 Visitors over 28 days - 7.32 per day

March we had 230 Visitors over 31 days - 7.41 per day + 1.22 %

April we had 307 Visitors over 30 days - 10.23 per day + 38.05 %

In May we should get another decent rise because it is only really the last two weeks of April that things started improving. It does take time for the search engines to pick up on changes that you have incorporated and for them to re-index your site.

For more info on how we increased our search traffic by 38 percent in one month you can view the rest of our Traffic Boost Articles.

The MasterMoz Directory - Link site with a Difference

I love being asked to write a review on a site related to what I Blog about anyway and The MasterMoz Directory is one of those. The thing that I really like about this site is the way that links are continually checked for accurate content (i.e related to the category they have been submitted to) and also if you find a site that doesn't really fit into the category that you are in - as long as you have your facts right they will do something about it.

Heres a quote from the site to explain what I mean...

Websites that are listed on MasterMOZ, are continually monitored by the peer members of the categories they are listed in. If a listing is found to be inaccurate, the listing must be edited by the owner/author within 15 days or it will go off-line.
I decided to submit my site to the directory. Signing up for the site is easy, I like simple signup forms that don't ask for your life story and this site has an easy one. Member name, email address and password - once you have registered they send you an email to confirm you are who you say you are. One thing to be careful of is to check your spam folder - I found the confirmation email went straight in there. (I am a user of Gmail.)
Now that your account has been approved you need to locate an appropriate directory from the main page and then find the sub category that best suits your site.

For my Blog I submitted it to the Internet Blogs FAQs, Help and Tutorials category - it was just a matter of browsing to that category and then clicking on submit listing. Another great feature that I was impressed with was the feature where you just type in your web address and the system automatically picks up the title and description from your site.

Once you have entered the rest of the information about your site thats it, your site is added and you can now view it which looks like the screen shot below. There are links out to your Alexa rating, Backlinks and Visitors to the Directory can rate your site so there is also a social networking side to this directory.

Submitting your site to directorys is a great way to increase your search engine rankings, the more sites that link to you makes you more "popular" in Googles eyes. So its a good idea to submit your site to Directorys like MasterMoz.

Blogspot Title Tags how to Remove Blog Name from the Beginning

The theory of Title Tags we are discussing applies to all websites and Blogs, we show how to fix this behaviour in the Blogger Templates, however if you use Wordpress here is a great little SEO Title Plugin that you can use.

You may have noticed that when you post an article via your blogger dashboard the default title tags append the Blog name to the front of the title. This means that if you have the title "5 ways to Make Money Fast" the actual title as the search engines see it will be...

The Million Dollar Experiment heads Down Under: 5 ways to Make Money Fast

"So what" I can hear you saying - well the facts are that search engines take the title tags very seriously indeed, and they start at the beginning with the first few words being the most important ( or supposedly most relevant ) and then it drops after that as I have illustrated below.

So as you can see we are wasting most of our prime real estate with the title of our Blog and unless you are really famous it is highly likely that any search's that are going to be relevant to your site are more likely to be picked up in the title of your actual Post so we are going to change our Blogger template so that this comes first and the Blog name second.

How to change the Blogger Template to Show title of Post before Blog name on Single Posts
We need to edit the template so head into your Blogger dashboard and click on template then edit html to get access to the code that we need to change. Once you are in there you need to follow the instructions on this post Changing the Blogger Title Tag. All it involves is cutting and pasting some new code.

It worked for me, check out how the title now sits...

How to change the Title of your Main Page
Now this may seem so obvious that its ridiculous however what are the key words that you are using in the main title of your blog... all I had was The Million Dollar Experiment Down Under. Now this was great for people searching for the "million dollar experiment", I was ranking 2nd only to Steve Pavlina for that - however not to many people really search for that on a daily basis. So I have now added the keywords that I am concentrating on to the beginning of the Title. If you look at the main title of my page now it reads Make Money Fast - The Million Dollar Experiment Down Under.
To change this yourself go into the blogger dashboard click on Settings , then Basic and simply add in your keywords to the title of your Blog.

I would advise that you give it a shot, it can only help the search engines pick up on what you are really writing about. Make sure that you back up your template first!

Submit your Site to Free Directorys - Bloggers Toolkit Series

One of the methods that I have been using recently to promote my various sites is to submit them to free directories. Now when I first started to do this I played a little bit of hit and miss as I was searching for them on Google and was often disappointed to find that not only did the site require payment, but I was probably in for a lifetime of spam as well!

Bring on Mr-SEO - I had recently been listening to a number of great pod casts regarding Search Engine Optimization and in one of his pod casts Joe mentions a directory list that he has on his site that has been built up over time. It lists directories that are free to submit your site to and they don't even require a reciprocal link.

Now you have to be very patient when doing this as it can be a time consuming task submitting your site to directories however long term it should pay off, so just get on and do it. If you have multiple sites its quite good because you can submit a number of them at at once.

I suggest starting a spreadsheet and recording which sites you have submitted to along with any other relevant information. One of my colleagues is starting at the bottom of the list and working up, I am working my way down.

Anyway heres the link if you want to go and do some work ... submit to directories some of the sites that you will be submitting to have some pretty decent page ranks. Remember its not quick, you need to submit a fair bit of info in some of the directories so put aside an hour or two and work your way through as many as you can.

Make Money Fast - An experiment in Choosing Words

Previously we have looked at tools that show the popularity of certain keywords. What you can do is ideally try and find a set of key words that are popular yet don't have every man and his dog trying to optimize their sites for it - then start to build them into the content of your site, plus hopefully get people to link to your site with the keywords as the anchor text.

I have decided to try a little experiment that will hopefully make money fast for me at the same time - firstly lets go and check out our new phrase on the Overture Keyword selector tool to determine how popular it is - have you guessed what three words I am using yet?

And remember these keyword results are just from yahoo, so we can probably multiply it by 3 to get a more relevant picture of how many people are searching for these words.

Now we need to do a search on Google and see how many results one gets for carrying out a search such as this. Quite a few 47,200,000 actually.

However what I liked about this is that the first page of sites didn't really look that intimidating, and by that I mean there is for example an ezine article, a wikipedia article and a couple of lame looking sites. Not really a site dedicated to the art of Making Money Fast which is probably all it would take to get up there.

So just to recap we have found some reasonably popular words , and we have done a search on Google and theres millions of page results which makes the task a challenging one.

Now the next thing we need to do is track our progress. We need to know where our site currently ranks for this term. Then we are going to keep checking back and rate our progress.

For this head to Google Rankings (note you will need to get your Google API key first ) and lets see where currently the Million Dollar Experiment Down Under ranks for the key words "Make Money Fast" ....

As you can see currently we are not ranking for these terms at all, so this will be an interesting task to see how long it takes.

Of course if you would like to assist and link to this article it would certainly be appreciated.

Good luck, let me know how you get on and where you rank for your chosen terms, please think of your own terms however - we don't want to be fighting over the same words!

6 Skills I Use to Make Money Online

I was thinking today to do what you and I do takes quite a diverse skill set. Now I am certainly not an expert at most things, the only advanced knowledge I would have is in the area of SQL for programming databases, certainly something most webmasters can live without. Anyway I thought I would list the skills that I use on a regular basis to run and maintain the 7 or so websites/blogs that myself and a couple of colleagues own. With the way templates and CMS sites are nowadays most of this is probably not necessary however it certainly comes in handy if you want to build or adapt something original.

1/ PHP/HTML Programming - this is something that I do because I have to, I am no expert at it and usually pull together bits of code that I find on the web to achieve whatever task I am trying to get on top of. PHP is a powerful language and I know that more of my time spent learning more about it will assist in the future. It is also what Wordpress is written in so comes in handy for Wordpress blog modifications.

2/ MySQL - This is the database behind many websites and again is part of the platform that Wordpress uses, luckily for me working as a Database Analyst in my day job this part comes fairly easy to me, however can be confusing for some.

3/ General Computer Knowledge - After working in IT and performing a variety of functions over the years this is not to much of a show stopper for me, however when setting up my development environment and configuring Apache Web Services, PHP and MySQL to replicate the environment of my ISP I have often thought that as painful as it can prove to be for me, some people must really struggle trying to get this stuff going.

4/ Writing Skills - These are necessary for Blogging, probably an area where I really struggle compared to some of the Bloggers out there. However I do what I can and try and spellcheck my work and proof read everything so hopefully there are not to many errors in my posts. Unfortunately I left school when I was 16 and went and worked in a tyre shop - so don't have the best education compared to most people!

5/ SEO Knowledge - This is something I am very interested in and learning more and more as time goes on. I really think that having great SEO knowledge can be the difference between having a good site that no one visits and having a good site that makes you a few bucks because its traffic heavy. In the last couple of weeks I have been doing some fine tuning on a few of my sites and hope to see some results in the weeks to come

6/ General Internet Knowledge - Ftp, http, paypal, forums, image handling, RSS Feeds, RSS Readers etc etc the list never ends, you need to have good general knowledge of the internet.

The way the Blogosphere is now you can probably make it with very few of these skills, however the more knowledge that you gain the better your chances will be. I think if you are a great writer this can mean that you can more than likely make it without to many other skills, however you made require some assistance to get you going.

Tracking Keywords - Bloggers Toolkit Series

You may wonder why all the focus on key words lately however it is all about money really. To achieve my goal of earning one million nz dollars I need lots and lots of traffic to my sites - thousands of visitors a day.

Of course one great way to get traffic is optimizing your website or blog for popular keywords which bring us to the second part of this keyword series. You may want to read the first article before taking on this one. Keyword Selector Tool - Bloggers Toolkit Series

There is a tool that I have found to be very useful and well worthwhile for the tracking of where your site ranks over time related to certain keywords. This is good stuff for Bloggers and site owners trying to get more traffic because it means you can measure the success of changes that you make when trying to optimize your site for certain keywords.

The tool is called the Search Engine Key Word Tracker - however before you go and register for it, let me give you the lowdown.

Why would you want to use this tool?
If you are interested in optimizing your website or Blog for certain keywords and would like to track and measure how you are going a tool like this will give you the necessary visibility of where you are at on an ongoing basis.

How do you use it?
Its pretty simple to use which is good to know! Basically you wander along to Search Engine Key Word Tracker register which just takes a couple of secs and then you can log in to the control panel. From here you simply add the keywords along with the sites that you are interested in and it will display where they are currently ranked in Google.

Once you have set these up it is just a matter of working on your site to promote the words that you are interested in and you can check back whenever you like to see how its going. One thing to keep in mind is that when you log in to view this tool you need to click on the Check All link to update the information.

There are many ways of improving the ranking of your site for certain keywords and the 3 methods that I use most often are...

1/ Using the key term in anchor text of a link - if you don't know what this means it is the words shown for a link - not the actual link itself. For example great site would be the way to go if you wanted to promote these keywords for the site www.shoemoney.com which is the link behind it.

2/ Using the words in the title of the html page

3/ Including them in the text of your site, particularly as headings and/or bold text as the searchbots treat these as more important than general text.

Goodluck with your keyword optimization and let me know of any other worthwhile suggestions that you have, I am also always on the look out for good tools to include in the Bloggers Toolkit Series.

March results coming soon....the month is drawing to a close.
