Proxy Update - Not Quite Fast Money Yet!

Over the last couple of months myself and Greg set up a couple of new Proxy websites and attempted to experiment with them as a way of making money. Here is how we are going so far...

Proxy 1 - onemorepimp.com
Setup: Nov 2 - 2007
Last Months Traffic: 2093 Unique Visitors
Average Monthly Earnings: $12.75

Proxy 2 - unblockshop.com
Setup: Nov 25 - 2007
Last Months Traffic: 3911 Unique Visitors (worked out from last 10 days traffic)
Average Monthly Earnings: $6.2

(Earnings worked out from daily figures taken over last 7 days, then multiplied by 31 to get average month - this being necessary as one of the sites, has not yet been going for a whole month.)

The advertising that is earning money is just contextual advertising and for the amount of traffic the earnings are quite low. We really need ten times the traffic to start making some decent money however at least the sites are paying for themselves at this point

What Effect Does A $7 Traffic Blast Have On Your Site

Feeling our way through cyberspace with our first Proxy Onemorepimp.com has been an interesting experience for Greg and myself and getting traffic to a new site is always challenging.

The current visitors to the site as you will see in the graph below show that things are really just ticking away at the moment with nothing worth writing about in the way of visitors.

Thats why we decided to take a look at what one of the members on DP was offering called a "Proxy traffic Blast" hoping that it would help to launch our proxy site into cyberspace!

I received a message this morning along the lines of "your blast has been sent" so anxiously waited until this evening to both catch up with Greg and check analytics on the site as well as our advertising mediums to see what kind of impact we had received.

Well day 1 of our proxy blast is reassuring, we have earned a couple of bucks and as you can see from the analytics below traffic is heading in the right direction, lets however hope this proxy blast is long and keeps going!



Over the next few days I will continue to demonstrate just how much this $7 traffic blast helps the site, and whether it was worth it or just another meaningless waste of money.

One of my sites got Hacked..Also we look at a Proxy Blast

Today I got home from work to find one of our sites had been hacked, more than once by the look of it.

Its one of our best sites - its a myspace layouts site the hackers had turned it into a front page basically saying we had been hacked.

I have changed all my passwords for the site and also checked all the directory permissions as you don't want folders where someone can externally upload files. That can really be the doorway hackers are looking for.

Hopefully the changes I have made will keep them out, otherwise I am really going to have to start learning a lot more about website security.

It took me a while to get the site going again, fortunately they didn't delete all the files, however they certainly made a mess.

I feel violated right now!!

You may remember we recently set up a proxy site as an experiment in making money online, so far it has not made much for us however the visitors are slowly increasing. Greg and I have a myspace site with over 1500 friends on it that we have been sending bulletins out to - also we have invested $7 with a guy on the DP forums who promises to send a "proxy blast" of traffic. It appears that he is a member on a lot of yahoo groups and the like, and will send out a newsletter of some sort which includes our proxy to thousands of people.

Make Money Fast With Your Own Proxy Site

One popular method to make money online is with a Proxy site. We have just launched our first site and would like to share what we have learned so far, so that you can set your own site up if you want to.

I will also report further down the track with the success of this site and any additional lessons learned along the way.

If you decide you want to do your own site, feel free to ask me any questions, I am here to help and can give technical advice and/or assistance if necessary.

What is a proxy?

A proxy allows anyone anywhere to access sites that may otherwise be blocked. E.g at work you may be blocked from visiting facebook or myspace, however through a proxy you will be able to access them.

Why do you want a Proxy?

Proxies can become very viral and attract a huge amount of traffic in a short space of time, however they are not always looked upon as a long term solution because often they are blocked as soon as they are discovered by the schools, workplaces etc.

How much does it cost to set up a proxy?

Here are my set up costs.

Domain Name $7-15 (Godaddy with coupon code)
Custom Logo $5-00 (DP forums)
1st Month Hosting $4-00 (DP forums)

Total with 1 month hosting $16-15

And probably one hour of my time, which involved finding a template, uploading the files and a couple of minor customizations to setup AdSense and Logo etc.

Ok ok I am convinced what do I do now?

1./ Choose a proxy script - the most common types are php proxy (no longer being developed), zelune (this is the one I chose) and also a type called CGI-proxy which I have not had much to do with yet.

2./ Find hosting that allows proxies, remember to check with your hosting provider first because proxies are very resource intensive, so there may be a clause about whether or not they are allowed. A search on the DP forums is the best place that I found to find both discussions and links to good proxy hosting.

3./ Register the domain name of your choice, I use godaddy.com and you can normally find a coupon to save you a few dollars on the net. Once you have purchased the domain name, you will need to point the nameservers to your new hosting.

4./ Upload files to your hosting, change the pub-id for the adsense, and make any other minor changes that you may want to (e.g your own logo) and that really is about it.

Ok thats great - but how to make money from this?

We are trying several methods to generate traffic to our new proxy, there are many ways of doing this including topsites that list proxies, myspace bulletins and many other methods.

Money making is simply a matter of then converting this traffic, once the site is ticking along we may experiment with pop ups and pop unders, as well as the more traditional methods like AdSense. Remember your proxy may only be around for a short time, so its a good idea to make the most out of the traffic that you get.
