RealRank - Commonsense at last
Well Google I think that you have been pipped at the post (sorry for the pun..) with this one, instead of spending your time trying to punish poor bloggers scraping to make a living online by reducing pagerank which has in effect now made pagerank mean nothing at all...certainly not a metric you can use to get some idea of the popularity and authority of a site - Google should have been working to improve their algorithms to reduce the reliance on the paid link industry which they created....
One good thing to come out of all this is RealRank which is almost ready to be released by Izea (which is the parent company of payperpost).
RealRank is an interesting way of ranking sites and uses the following key areas initially anyway. They are happy to share their formula and also to accept advice from the community. (Unlike our friends at Google)
70% weighted towards visitors per day
20% weighted towards amount of ACTIVE inbound links per day
10% weighted towards pageviews per day
I think this is a fantastic move forward, currently with pagerank I have one site that gets about 7 visitors a day and has a PR of 3 and this site which gets around 100 + has 600 pages of content and hundreds of links in and gets a PR of 0.
An advertiser would be far better off advertising on this site than the PR3 so Google have shot themselves in the foot there a little by destroying PR as any kind of site estimation tool.
If I hadn't been penalized the site would probably be a PR5 by now, which would have been ok and realrank would not have been necessary.
The future is looking bright with realrank coming into play, I am sure it will gradually take over pagerank as an advertising selling medium, especially as it uses visitors and pageviews as a big part of the equation.
Down with PageRank!!
