RealRank - Commonsense at last

Well Google I think that you have been pipped at the post (sorry for the pun..) with this one, instead of spending your time trying to punish poor bloggers scraping to make a living online by reducing pagerank which has in effect now made pagerank mean nothing at all...certainly not a metric you can use to get some idea of the popularity and authority of a site - Google should have been working to improve their algorithms to reduce the reliance on the paid link industry which they created....

One good thing to come out of all this is RealRank which is almost ready to be released by Izea (which is the parent company of payperpost).

RealRank is an interesting way of ranking sites and uses the following key areas initially anyway. They are happy to share their formula and also to accept advice from the community. (Unlike our friends at Google)

70% weighted towards visitors per day
20% weighted towards amount of ACTIVE inbound links per day
10% weighted towards pageviews per day

I think this is a fantastic move forward, currently with pagerank I have one site that gets about 7 visitors a day and has a PR of 3 and this site which gets around 100 + has 600 pages of content and hundreds of links in and gets a PR of 0.

An advertiser would be far better off advertising on this site than the PR3 so Google have shot themselves in the foot there a little by destroying PR as any kind of site estimation tool.

If I hadn't been penalized the site would probably be a PR5 by now, which would have been ok and realrank would not have been necessary.

The future is looking bright with realrank coming into play, I am sure it will gradually take over pagerank as an advertising selling medium, especially as it uses visitors and pageviews as a big part of the equation.

Down with PageRank!!

Pagerank - ZERO

Well folks it appears I now have no pagerank whatsover, google has decided that although they continue to send lots of search engine traffic to this site, they want it to appear that it has no value whatsover.

I for one am confused... what have I done that is so bad except be open about what I am doing. It now appears that unless you hide your disclosures, you disguise your sponsored posts and you try to camouflage your text links you will be punished via a pagerank penalty. If on the other hand you...

  • Hide any sponsored posts as best you can...
  • Blend your sold text links into your content...
  • Don't disclose or mention anything like payperpost or similar networks...

Then you may get away with it and will come across as A1 fantastic site...

Google has lost the plot, whats going on guys you used to be a company I respected and looked up to. Now although I still earn money via your advertising network and of course appreciate the traffic that you send me I am really disappointed.

The facts are that now if you disclose and are open about what you are doing which means that you let your readers decide your worth you will be punished.

Google used to pride themselves on the line that you should write your content for people not search engines, well hasn't that changed, now they are saying you should base your content on what they as a search engine wants, and even go so far as changing your links especially for search engines... (nofollow)

Well maybe they have a master plan, however I am not that sure anymore... what do you think have google lost the plot?

Do we all now go cowering to google and tell them we have sinned, but finally seen the light and change our sites for search engines instead of the way they are for people?

What is Google Pagerank and How Does it Work?

Pagerank is an important component in the algorithm that Google uses when deciding how "relevant" a site is compared to the search words that are being used.

It is fairly simple to determine what pageranking your site has - just head to Google-pagerank and type in the URL of your site.

Pagerank goes from 0 - 10 with 10 being the best. Pagerank is worked out by how many good quality sites are linked in to yours and how many good quality sites you link out to. It is not just a matter of having 100's of links, the quality of the site determines the weight of each link, linking to "bad" sites can actually penalize you. (i.e if your page links to sites under penalty or ban, this can negatively impact the linking page’s search ranking.)

If your website has a pagerank of 0 there is no reason to be concerned, you will still show up in Googles search results, however you just may not rank as highly as other similar sites that have been around for longer and may have a better network of quality links.

The best way to improve your Google Pagerank is to provide links to quality content sites, and have good content sites link back to you - lots of them!

The Google Home Page - Your Home away from Home

Welcome to the first of our Web Bloggers Toolkit Series, we take a look at a simple yet useful tool from Google, the Google home page.

The Google personalized homepage is a useful tool because you can place all your links in one place as well as receive feeds from websites, blogs etc, all onto the one page. Then where ever you are in the world you simple sign in to www.google.com/ig and all your info is there.

You can add a task manager to the Google Home Page by using a 3rd party add in such as Remember the Milk. This can be a handy feature especially if you move around different machines a lot.

Once you have logged into your customized home page (you will need a gmail account for this) it is very simple to add new content, or move your existing content around via drag and drop.

It is possible, that simply by adding your own blogs to this homepage, it will ensure that googles spiders will revisit the site on a regular basis, which may help with search engine information.

Over the next few weeks we will be looking at several more web tools, that can be a useful part of every Bloggers Toolkit, including Pay-pal, the google toolbar, feed burner, Technorati and more.
