Pagerank - ZERO

Well folks it appears I now have no pagerank whatsover, google has decided that although they continue to send lots of search engine traffic to this site, they want it to appear that it has no value whatsover.

I for one am confused... what have I done that is so bad except be open about what I am doing. It now appears that unless you hide your disclosures, you disguise your sponsored posts and you try to camouflage your text links you will be punished via a pagerank penalty. If on the other hand you...

• Hide any sponsored posts as best you can...
• Blend your sold text links into your content...
• Don't disclose or mention anything like payperpost or similar networks...

Then you may get away with it and will come across as A1 fantastic site...

Google has lost the plot, whats going on guys you used to be a company I respected and looked up to. Now although I still earn money via your advertising network and of course appreciate the traffic that you send me I am really disappointed.

The facts are that now if you disclose and are open about what you are doing which means that you let your readers decide your worth you will be punished.

Google used to pride themselves on the line that you should write your content for people not search engines, well hasn't that changed, now they are saying you should base your content on what they as a search engine wants, and even go so far as changing your links especially for search engines... (nofollow)

Well maybe they have a master plan, however I am not that sure anymore... what do you think have google lost the plot?

Do we all now go cowering to google and tell them we have sinned, but finally seen the light and change our sites for search engines instead of the way they are for people?

Another PR Update - Just When You Thought It Was Safe to Go Back In the Water

If the first wave of PR updates wasn't enough it looks like we have just been hit with the second round, although this one seemed to change sites both up and down. Unfortunately for me most of my sites went down, with many 3's going down to 2's and one of my best sites sirblogger.com being strongly slapped down to a PR1.

A couple of new sites that I have now have PR however nothing worth writing home about.

If you thought you escaped the wrath of Google (like I thought for some of my sites ) think again, let me know if you have been stung by the second round.

UPDATE: it appears that sites like copyblogger and problogger that are big enough to make waves have had their PR put back up again.....

Have Google really lost the plot, they are not really playing fair are they. Maybe they think they are so powerful they can just do whatever they want.

Time to diversify

I think many of us have realized lately how you cannot rely on one single company for our online endeavors and I am of course talking about the way that Google can with one almighty swipe wipe out millions of dollars of text link value off the face of the earth in one single night. Will the text link industry ever be the same?

You used to be able to have assurance that if you generated enough one way links to your site you would end up with a fairly solid PR and in turn rank well on Google.

However the landscape is changing and so we must change with and adapt to the new environment and try to profit from it as best we can.

I think a lot of webmasters are up in arms a little at the moment, as for some many hours, weeks and even years of link building has now become useless, I notice that Matt Cutts home page has a PR rank of 6 and has one sentence on it, yet sites like copyblogger have tons of great info and doesn't even sell text links and his site is one that got the big slap and had his rank decreased from 6 to 4.

One can only wonder what they are trying to do, however one message is clear if Google remain the number one search engine they have an incredible power over what site owners can and can't do. I wonder if they would have done the same thing if say msn was number 1 and they were trying to gain the top spot.

Imagine if MSN suddenly brought a pageranking of their own and they did still place a high value on backlinks, however although it would probably not be to hard to convince all the bloggers out there right now to start using the MSN search engine how hard would it be to convince joe public?

I have recently heard on a couple of sites starting with shoemoney that widgetbucks have now pissed off google as well, by the way perhaps they place links in their widgets. How right do you think it is that Google gives widgetbucks such a slapping that they don't even rank for their name. Is it just a coincidence that they are competition for AdSense?

I used to think Google was the greatest, I have it all the gmail, the google homepage, I use the document apps and spend half my day with Google. I used to think they were like the underdog, looking after the little guys however now I am not so sure.

Have I been punished?

Well it looks like my site has dropped PR to 3 (it was a 4) , that is very disappointing however I guess we knew it could happen if we dared to ever sell links.

Do I really care? Well I care if it affects my income however I don't think any of my links were sold with PR in mind, it was more about the traffic they could generate being on more than 500 pages.

I just checked a live PR update checker and some DC's were showing 3 and some 4, so who knows.

Google are obviously trying to tell us all what we can put on our sites, and thats their choice to punish us, I guess as long as I haven't been slapped in the search results it doesn't really worry me to much.

Check your toolbars folks and also check this live pr checker.

Google Giving Loads of Search Engine Love..

I have noticed that over the last three or so days on a couple of my sites the search engine traffic has increased enormously. PR has stayed the same however its obvious that something is going on with the algorithms because the increase is substantial.

I am interested to hear if other bloggers and site owners have noticed anything in the last couple of days.

The only problem with getting this kind of increase is that you start to expect it however its important to remember that it can be quickly taken away.

I was reading today an article about pagerank and what if Google decide to suddenly take it away - what happens to the whole text link industry if they do? Well I think it would simply get replaced with something similar, it wouldn't be to hard to calculate the value of back links for a site and work out a similar rating would it?

Google would still have to include backlinks as part of their algorithm so the best they could do would be to hide it.

You need to spread your revenue sources as much as possible, so if something is taken away from you your empire is strong enough to continue.

Is a PageRank Update happening now?

Just a quick note, there are rumours floating around that a Google PageRank update is happening - anything going on with your sites?

Is the Next Google PageRank Update Near?

By looking at the previous dates of Google PageRank updates we can then see if we can predict when the next one is due. Having a higher PageRank as we all know means more money making opportunities for our sites. I would be so happy to achieve a PR of 5, however have been stuck with 4 for the last two updates. This time however I removed many of my links outwards off the homepage ( trying to get rid of the dreaded PageRank leakage ), so it will be interesting to see if by moving this it makes any difference.

One site has exactly what I was looking for, the dates of all the previous PR updates going back a couple of years - Page Rank Export List History.

Looking at the law of averages it appears that the next update should be before the end of July.

What PR are you hoping to get? Some of my sites are so new I will be happy to get any PR, however on this particular site I would really like to get a PR of 5. Its about time the Million Dollar Experiment Down Under got a little more Google love.....

Page Rank Leak - How to avoid it but still link to other sites

A few questions have been bandied about lately as to why I have removed the 40 or so sites that I used to link out to from my main page and placed them onto another page. Well the reason is that if you are trying to achieve the maximum page rank you are best linking out to other sites from your lowest ranked page, my homepage has a great rank but linking out to 40 or 50 other sites is possibly/probably holding it back from achieving its maximum page rank.

I want to reward the sites that really send me serious traffic however and you will see them updated on a monthly basis under my top 5 referrers on the right sidebar. The other sites also send me a decent amount of traffic and I will continue to link to them, however not from the main page. This is now going to be reserved for paying customers (e.g text link ads), and top referrers to this site.

So there is nothing wrong with linking to other sites from your front page, just keep it to a minimum if you can. I had what I believe to be to many, it becomes cluttered as well after 8 months of link swapping.

If you have an opinion on this lets discuss it some more, do you think it is a good or a bad thing to move the majority of the other sites that you link to over to another page? Or is it best to keep them all on the home page?

Google Pagerank Competition - Winners are Grinners

Last month I entered a competition to predict the Page Rank of Kumiko's website. As you have probably heard by now Kumiko ended up getting a pagerank of 5 which happened to be exactly what I predicted. I was fortunate enough to be chosen by her to be the winner of the grand prize which was $30 US dollars as well as the chance to write a post on her site about whatever I choose.

How did you know it would be a 5
I was fairly certain that it would be a 5 because of the amount of sites that were linking to Kumiko and the popularity of her site. This site got a rank of 4 after only a couple of months and with the extra links that Kumiko has got I suspected she would be going one better.

What are you going to do with the Money
To be honest I don't really feel that comfortable accepting the money from Kumiko, she has already paid me via paypal and its very much appreciated. It just doesn't sit right to keep the money especially when she is the top referrer of traffic to my site! What I have decided to do is to donate the entire amount of 30 US dollars to charity and I will post proof of that on this site once I have done so. So don't worry Kumiko its going to a good cause and will not end up in my beer fridge! On that subject if anyone knows of a worthy International Charity that accepts paypal please let me know via a comment. Only reputable Charities please its not going to the donation box of another blogger!

What are you going to write about on her site
I have never really guest blogged on another site before so want this to be something special. Kumiko has kindly given me as much time as I like so I am going to take my time and try and write something really worthwhile.

What a fantastic start to May - Its going to be a great month I can tell!

Google Page Rank Underway

I first got wind of the latest Page Rank Update on Kumikos Cash Quest . It seems that the April 2007 update is indeed in progress.

Now why this is of particular interest to me is that I predicted in a competition that Kumiko was running that she would end up with a Page Rank of 5. Lets check out whats happening on the Google Data Centers for Kumikos site and see if we are in with a chance.

Theres is a tool at this site http://oy-oy.eu/google/pr/ that queries a number of Google Data Centers and its easy to see that somethings going on. Luckily for me it looks like my guess at this stage was right on the money.

Next thing to do was of course to check my own site which already has a PR of 4 however unfortunately for me it looks like its staying there for another 3 or 4 months!

Google Pagerank Prediction Review of Kumiko's Cash Quest

There are many posts around with Bloggers and Website owners wanting to predict what PageRank they are going to be come the next update - but the truth is that unless you know whatever complex formula it is that Google uses to work out Page Rank then its an educated guess at best.

Kumiko's Cash Quest has a competition going to predict her PageRank and I guess its time that I entered this competition. I am pretty sure that Kumiko's site will end up with a PageRank of 5.

Kumiko and myself have been on the money quest path for around the same time, I think I started a couple of months before her and she was one of the first sites that I exchanged links with.

Things that Rock about her site
The best things that I have seen on Kumiko's website in the 5 months or so that I have been reading are...

1. AGLOCO Will Not Make Money Online! Ever! Linked to by some of the big names of the Blogosphere this article was probably responsible for really putting Kumiko's site on the map. How ironic that Agloco are still making excuses and forever delaying the launch of their toolbar. I can proudly say I never signed up! (maybe it was because I took heed of this great article)
   
2. 6 Lessons Britney Spears Can Teach You About Blogging the Britney Spears Post this was just after the Agloco one, 2 super article hits within a couple of weeks, awesome.
   
3. Kumiko has great photoshop skills, check out some of the images in her posts that she has created - all this takes time and effort.
   
4. Kumiko is not afraid to say whats on her mind, some of her posts are a bit controversial however I think thats great - it certainly keeps me returning to her site.
   

Things that don't rock
I don't really have any negatives to say about Kumiko's Blog shes cool - if I had to say one thing it would be to much Pink!

Focusing on your Referrers - I'm gonna spread the word on every Post!

To often in the past I have not given enough credit to the great sites that I am fortunate enough to have linking to me. These sites pump through traffic to my Blog on a consistent basis.

What I have decided to do is that every post I will include as part of my template a link to the top 5 Sites judged from traffic sent to this Blog from the previous Month. The below sites are ones that I regularly visit myself and I hope that you find them as interesting and helpful as what I do.

Google Page Rank has come through!

I'm sure yesterday I didnt have a page rank at all, yet today I appear to have a pagerank of 4 on my main URL. (A couple of my other pages already had page ranks). Well I am pretty happy about that, the blog has only been going for 3 1/2 months. Check your home pages and let me know how you are getting on. You can check all the data centers here.

That kind of crept up on me, a couple of weeks ago everyone was talking about it happening, yet nothing on this site then whammo, out of the blue there it is. I have done a quick search around the blogosphere and there does not seem much mention about it.

Maybe half the world is still asleep!

Google Pagerank Update - Live PR Checker

While searching the blogosphere about the Google PR update that appears to be happening, I came across this tool (found a reference to it on the Monetize Your Blog site )

Its a great tool and one that we will add to our Bloggers Tool Kit. The tool queries the Google Data Centers and shows you all the Page Ranks that your site is displaying as well as calculates the average.

What is Google Pagerank and How Does it Work?

Pagerank is an important component in the algorithm that Google uses when deciding how "relevant" a site is compared to the search words that are being used.

It is fairly simple to determine what pageranking your site has - just head to Google-pagerank and type in the URL of your site.

Pagerank goes from 0 - 10 with 10 being the best. Pagerank is worked out by how many good quality sites are linked in to yours and how many good quality sites you link out to. It is not just a matter of having 100's of links, the quality of the site determines the weight of each link, linking to "bad" sites can actually penalize you. (i.e if your page links to sites under penalty or ban, this can negatively impact the linking page’s search ranking.)

If your website has a pagerank of 0 there is no reason to be concerned, you will still show up in Googles search results, however you just may not rank as highly as other similar sites that have been around for longer and may have a better network of quality links.

The best way to improve your Google Pagerank is to provide links to quality content sites, and have good content sites link back to you - lots of them!
